The Kennedy era silver halves were the most popular issuance of silver half dollars that was ever minted. It has been said that because of the president’s popularity and the emotional attachment many people had to the coin, the federal mint could not keep up with the demand for the silver halves.

Finally, when the government caught up with the demand for the coin, the half dollar had become somewhat obsolete and most businesses did not use the piece of currency. The large and bulky coins were hard to handle and people did not want to utilize them in general circulation because of their size and awkwardness. These coins were then generally replaced with coins such as the quarter and dime, which are both much smaller than the silver halves.

Banks Stopped Stocking Silver Halves

By the beginning of the 1970’s, banks had stopped stocking half dollars in their drawers and this would eventually lead to the currency being virtually stripped from circulation. Although the money has now become obsolete, they have been re minted for use in collector’s sets. The size of the silver halves are said to be perfect for collection style mints. The coin did have somewhat of a comeback when many casinos began using it in their slot machines. However, with the advent of coin less operation, they have now been replaced.

No Silver

The silver halves that were produced after the year of 1963 contains very small amounts of actual silver prices. That is why many collectors look for pieces that were minted before the 1960’s. These coins are very valuable not for their date minted but for the fact that they have large amounts of silver in them. This is the reason that many of the silver halves from before 1963 are not readily available.

You can find these coins in coin shops and flea markets all across the United States. If you are a collector, you may want to visit some shops online to see what exactly they have to offer. There are plenty of places that you can go to find the types of silver halves you are looking for.
